CAF doubles WAFCON 2024 prize money to boost Women’s Football in Africa
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a major increase in the prize money for the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to be hosted in Morocco.
CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe, disclosed that the prize money for the tournament winner has been doubled, while the total prize pool for the competition has also been raised by 45 percent. He said the move is part of CAF’s continuous efforts to promote and strengthen women’s football across the continent.
According to the new breakdown, the team that wins the tournament will now receive $1 million, while the runner-up will go home with $500,000. The third-placed side will earn $350,000, and the fourth-placed team will receive $300,000.
Dr Motsepe noted that this increment was necessary to improve the welfare and remuneration of women footballers, as well as coaches and officials participating in the tournament. He stressed that CAF remains committed to ensuring the growth and visibility of women’s football in Africa.
