CBN refutes introducing new N5,000, N10,000 Banknotes

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed reports suggesting that it has introduced ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 notes, labeling them as false and misleading.
The speculation, which gained traction across social media, claimed that the apex bank was launching the higher-denomination notes to improve cash transactions and liquidity management.
Some reports even cited a supposed Deputy Governor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir Jr., as confirming the rollout from May 1, 2025.
However, the CBN has firmly denied these claims. In a statement, the bank clarified:
“This content is NOT from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Kindly note that the official website of the CBN is cbn.gov.ng.”
The bank urged the public to disregard such misinformation and rely only on official sources for updates regarding its policies and currency-related decisions.
