Chelle names Uzoho Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper
Head coach of Nigeria’s senior national team, Eric Chelle, has selected Francis Uzoho as the new first-choice goalkeeper of the Super Eagles.
The decision comes as Stanley Nwabali remains without a club after terminating his contract with Chippa United, creating uncertainty over his match fitness ahead of the team’s return to action later this month.
Chelle reportedly moved swiftly to settle on Uzoho, who served as second-choice goalkeeper during the last Africa Cup of Nations campaign where Nigeria finished third.
The coach is said to remain unimpressed with Maduka Okoye, currently with Udinese, following his decision to snub the national team during the AFCON after being informed he would not be the first-choice keeper. Sources indicate Chelle viewed the move as a challenge to his authority.
However, Uzoho is expected to face stiff competition from Arthur Okonkwo, who recently switched allegiance from England to Nigeria and currently plays for Wrexham AFC.
While Okonkwo is eligible to feature in friendly matches, he must await clearance from FIFA regarding his nationality switch before participating in competitive fixtures such as AFCON and World Cup qualifiers.
The development sets the stage for renewed rivalry in Nigeria’s goalkeeping department as the Super Eagles prepare for crucial upcoming engagements.
