Court set to deliver crucial verdict in Nnamdi Kanu’s terrorism case today
A Federal High Court in Nigeria will on 20 November 2025 deliver its long awaited judgment in the terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), marking a major moment in the country’s high-profile separatist case.
The court fixed the date after months of legal arguments, adjournments, and jurisdictional challenges brought forward by Kanu’s legal team. He is facing a seven-count charge bordering on terrorism, incitement, and actions linked to the separatist campaign in the South-East.
Kanu, who has repeatedly maintained his innocence, earlier asked the court to dismiss the case, arguing that Nigeria lacks a valid terrorism law capable of sustaining the charges against him. His lawyers insist the prosecution cannot rely on legal provisions they consider defective or unconstitutional.
The Federal Government, however, has maintained that Kanu must answer for what it describes as serious national security offences, including broadcasts and directives allegedly issued while in exile.
As tensions simmer, the upcoming judgment has drawn national and international attention, particularly in the South-East where Kanu commands a strong following. Security agencies are reportedly monitoring the situation closely to ensure peace before and after the ruling.
Today’s decision is expected to determine whether the IPOB leader will continue to face trial, regain his freedom, or pursue further appeal processes. The outcome is likely to have far-reaching implications for security, regional politics, and ongoing discussions about Nigeria’s unity.
