FCT Resident Doctors begin Seven-Day warning strike over poor conditions

The Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory has commenced a seven-day warning strike to protest poor working conditions and systemic failures in the FCT health system.

In a communiqué signed by the association’s president, Dr. George Ebong, and other executives, the doctors said they are overworked, often forced to cover multiple departments, and are operating under immense pressure due to severe manpower shortages.

They called for urgent intervention to address unpaid allowances, delayed promotions, underpayment of promoted staff, non-functional equipment, and generally poor working conditions, stressing that immediate action is needed to boost morale and improve service delivery.

The association noted that it had issued a 10-day ultimatum on September 1 to relevant government agencies, warning of a nationwide strike if their demands remained unmet.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, assured in a media briefing that talks with the National Association of Resident Doctors are ongoing and expressed optimism that the planned strike could be averted.
