Flying Eagles stun Senegal in Penalty Shootout to reach U20 AFCON Semi-Finals
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have booked their place in the semi-finals of the CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt 2025, after a thrilling 3-1 victory over defending champions Senegal in a penalty shootout.
The fiercely contested quarter-final clash, held at the Suez Canal Stadium, ended goalless after 120 minutes, living up to the classic West African rivalry that fans anticipated.
Both teams approached the encounter with great determination, creating numerous opportunities but failing to find the net during both regular and extra time. Despite moments of attacking flair, neither side managed to break the deadlock, leading to a tense penalty shootout to determine the winner.
The Nigerian team displayed remarkable composure under pressure, successfully converting three of their spot-kicks, while their Senegalese counterparts faltered. Precious Benjamin, Emmanuel Chukwu, and Israel Ayuma all confidently dispatched their penalties, while goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt made a crucial save that proved decisive for Nigeria.
Senegal struggled during the shootout, as Pierre Dorival’s effort was saved, Mame Mor Faye’s attempt was denied, and Ousmane Konaté struck the crossbar. Seydi Diouck managed to score Senegal’s only penalty, but it was insufficient to prevent their elimination.
This victory marks Nigeria’s eighth consecutive success in the U20 AFCON quarter-finals under the current tournament format, emphasising their strength at this stage of the competition. The Flying Eagles, who remained unbeaten in the group stage, are now just two matches away from claiming an eighth continental title.
Throughout the match, both teams had chances to secure victory. Nigeria’s Kparobo Arierhi and Divine Oliseh tested Senegal’s goalkeeper, Mouhamed Sissokho, while Cheikh Thiam’s powerful header for Senegal struck the woodwork in the first half.
As extra time wore on, fatigue became evident, but both sides continued to push for a decisive goal. Nigeria’s substitutions, including the introduction of Precious Benjamin and Rickson Mendos, injected fresh energy into the attack. Tahir Maigana came close to sealing the win for the Flying Eagles with a curling shot in the 106th minute, followed by a powerful effort from Ayuma.
Ultimately, it was Nigeria’s discipline and composure during the penalties that secured their semi-final berth. The defeat marked Senegal’s first knockout stage loss in the U20 AFCON since 2017, bringing an abrupt end to their title defence.
The Flying Eagles will now shift their focus to the semi-finals as they continue their quest to add another U20 AFCON title to their impressive record.
