Former SSS DG, Pioneer NIA DG Albert Horsfall Dies

Former Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS) and pioneer Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Chief Albert Korubo Horsfall, has died.

His death was announced on Friday in a statement signed by his son, Donald Horsfall, on behalf of the family.

The family described the late elder statesman and prominent son of Rivers State as a beloved patriarch whose death occurred peacefully after what it described as a fulfilled and impactful life.

According to the statement, Horsfall dedicated his life to God, his family, community, Rivers State and Nigeria, leaving behind a legacy of public service and leadership.

“Chief A.K. Horsfall was an illustrious son of the Niger Delta, a distinguished public servant, statesman, administrator, and one of the most respected figures in the history of Rivers State and Nigeria at large,” the family said.

The family said Horsfall served the country with dedication, integrity and patriotism throughout his lifetime, adding that his contributions to public service had left an enduring legacy.

It described him as one of the founding fathers of Rivers State and an elder statesman who made significant contributions to the development of the state and Nigeria.

The statement added that his counsel, courage and commitment to justice, peace and good governance earned him the respect of generations of leaders and citizens.

“While the family mourns this irreparable loss, we take comfort in the extraordinary life he lived and the indelible mark he left on the sands of time,” the statement said.

His son, Donald, said the memory of his father would continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him and benefiting from his knowledge, experience and compassion.

The family said details of the funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.

Horsfall held several key positions during his public service career, including Director-General of the State Security Service, pioneer Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency and chairman of the former Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission.

His death marks the passing of a prominent figure in Nigeria’s security and intelligence establishment and an elder statesman from Rivers State.
