Gov. Bago launches 500-unit housing estate in Kontagora, names layout after Sarkin Sudan
Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has flagged off the development of a 500-unit residential housing estate in Kontagora as part of his administration’s urban renewal and housing expansion programme.
The project, which will be sited on 40 hectares of state-owned land, is expected to provide affordable housing, boost infrastructure development and open up new areas of Kontagora for residential and commercial activities.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Governor Bago said the land, which was previously reserved for the Radio Niger Corporation, had been encroached upon and occupied by unauthorised persons.
He explained that the state government had reclaimed and cleared the land and would provide the necessary site-and-services infrastructure before allocating plots to prospective buyers.
The governor announced that the estate would be named after the Sarkin Sudan of Kontagora, Alhaji Muhammad Barau Mu’azu II, in recognition of his contributions to the community.
According to him, the project aligns with his administration’s vision of expanding urban development, creating decent housing opportunities and improving the living standards of residents.
Governor Bago also disclosed that the state government would collaborate with the Renewed Hope Housing Project to ensure the successful execution of the estate.
Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Barr. Bello Ahmad Agwara, said the layout covers about 305 plots, including residential plots measuring 100 by 50 and 100 by 30, as well as three commercial plots.
He added that the estate would also feature a neighbourhood centre, shopping mall, children’s playground, clinic and other supporting infrastructure designed in line with the New Niger Agenda of the Bago administration.
The governor expressed confidence that the project would not only transform Kontagora’s physical landscape but also provide more residents with the opportunity to own homes.
