IBBUL undergraduate takes own life over alleged gambling loss, indebtednes
A 300-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), Niger State, identified as Kelvin Danlami, has been found dead in an apparent suicide.
Danlami, a student of the Department of Computer Science, was reportedly discovered hanging from the ceiling of his room at an off-campus hostel in Lapai town on Monday evening.
Sources said the deceased did not leave behind any suicide note.
Some of his colleagues, who spoke under anonymity, described him as a habitual gambler who had been battling financial difficulties in recent times.
According to one of the sources, Danlami was said to be heavily indebted and had been under pressure over how to settle his obligations.
“He was deeply involved in gambling and owed several people. At times, he struggled to pay his school fees, accommodation, feeding and other personal expenses,” the source said.
Confirming the incident, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Baba Akote, said management was aware of the development and would issue an official statement after internal deliberations.
“We are meeting over the matter and an official statement will be released afterwards,” Akote said.
The Secretary-General of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), Aliyu Abubakar, also confirmed the incident, describing it as tragic.
“The incident is sad and painful. On behalf of the entire student community of IBB University, Lapai, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, friends, the Department of Computer Science and the entire university community,” he said.
Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the General Hospital mortuary in Lapai.
