INEC Osun REC urges political parties to conduct lawful primaries ahead of 2026 Guber Election
Dr. Mutiu Agboke, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Osun State, has called on political parties to conduct their primaries in strict compliance with the law.
In a statement released on Monday by INEC Public Relations Officer Olurode Musa in Osogbo, Agboke stressed that adherence to the law is crucial ahead of the 2026 governorship election, scheduled for August 8, 2026.
“The Commission emphasises the need for the conduct of free, fair and peaceful primary elections that reflect the will of the party members as a panacea for the reduction of pre-election litigations,” he said.
Agboke highlighted that primary elections have historically been a source of pre-election disputes, which can be mitigated if parties follow the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, and INEC’s guidelines.
He further urged parties to ensure transparent, democratic, and peaceful primaries where all aspirants are given equal opportunities to participate. According to INEC’s guidelines, party primaries in Osun for the 2026 governorship election are scheduled between November 24 and December 15.
The REC added that INEC is ready to provide necessary support and guidance to political parties and called on security agencies and other stakeholders to assist in ensuring peaceful and credible primaries.
“INEC will continue to monitor the activities of political parties and take appropriate actions within the ambit of the law against any party that fails to comply with the electoral laws and regulations,” he said.
