NABTEB 2024 Exams: 67.6% of candidates achieve five or more credits

The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) has published the outcomes of its November/December 2024 certificate examinations, with 67.56 per cent of candidates achieving five or more credits including both English Language and Mathematics.

Dr Nnasia Asanga, the Acting Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, made the announcement on Monday in Benin. He revealed that 44,226 candidates sat for the National Business Certificate/Advanced National Business Certificate (NBC/ANBC) and the National Technical Certificate/Advanced National Technical Certificate (NTC/ANTC) examinations, with 29,880 of them meeting the academic threshold necessary for progression in both their studies and careers.

Dr Asanga explained, “Among the 44,226 candidates, 29,880 secured at least five credits with English Language and Mathematics, which represents 67.56 per cent. In addition, a total of 42,431 candidates – amounting to 95.94 per cent – attained five or more credits regardless of whether English and Mathematics were included.” He did, however, note that this pass rate marks a decrease when compared to the November/December 2023 results, where 71.27 per cent of candidates reached the five-credit benchmark including the core subjects.

He further observed, “While our performance in terms of five credits including English and Mathematics has dipped compared to last year, the overall percentage of candidates obtaining five credits regardless of the subjects has seen a modest improvement from 94.93 per cent in 2023.”

In a bid to uphold the integrity of its examinations, NABTEB has also managed to reduce instances of malpractice; only 0.53 per cent of candidates were involved in dishonest practices, a slight improvement from the 0.57 per cent recorded in the previous year.

Reaffirming the board’s dedication to curbing examination fraud, Dr Asanga highlighted ongoing collaborative efforts with the Federal Ministry of Education and the introduction of innovative measures to enhance exam security. “We will persist in implementing new strategies to counteract examination malpractice and promote a culture of academic integrity within our system,” he assured.

Beyond the NBC and NTC examinations, Dr Asanga emphasised NABTEB’s significant contribution to technical and vocational education. The board also conducts assessments such as the National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) for Technical Colleges, the National Skills Qualification (NSQ), and the Modular Trade Certificate (MTC), all designed to equip candidates with practical skills.

In an additional announcement, he mentioned that NABTEB has begun issuing electronic certificates (e-certificates) for candidates from the cohorts of 2017 to 2022, facilitating easier digital access to their academic records.

He concluded by urging candidates, parents, and guardians to register for the upcoming May/June 2025 in-school examinations, underscoring the dual benefits of NABTEB qualifications in both career progression and academic advancement. Dr Asanga also noted that the Federal Ministry of Education has approved a transition from Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) to Federal Technical Colleges (FTCs) in response to modern workforce demands. He acknowledged challenges such as funding limitations, prevailing perceptions and stigma surrounding Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and curriculum issues, all of which require adequate support and legislative intervention.
