NAFDAC sets Dec. 2025 deadline to ban sachets, small-packaged alcohol nationwide

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the nationwide ban on alcoholic beverages sold in sachets and small bottles under 200 millilitres.

The agency announced December 2025 as the final deadline for production and sale, with full enforcement beginning in January 2026.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, made it clear that no further extensions will be granted. She urged manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to comply fully, warning that the agency will take firm action against violators.

Supported by the Nigerian Senate and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the ban sought to protect children, teenagers, and young adults from the harmful effects of alcohol abuse.

Prof. Adeyeye noted that cheap, portable, and easily concealable alcoholic drinks had contributed to rising cases of addiction, road accidents, domestic violence, and other social issues.

“This ban is protective, not punitive,” she said. “The health of our nation, especially our children, is more important than short-term economic gain.”

Prof. Adeyeye explained that the move aligned with Nigeria’s commitment to the World Health Organization’s Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol.

She emphasized that the policy would reflect a shared national responsibility to safeguard public health and ensure a safer society.

“The decision is grounded in science, public health, and national interest,” she added. “Protecting our children and preserving the stability of our future workforce is not just NAFDAC’s duty — it is the responsibility of every Nigerian.”

With the enforcement deadline approaching, NAFDAC reiterated its resolve to collaborate with industry players, health advocates, and law enforcement agencies to ensure compliance and create a healthier environment for all Nigerians.
