Neymar sees red for ‘Hand of God’ stunt in Santos stalemate
Brazilian football star Neymar was shown a red card on Sunday after attempting a controversial ‘Hand of God’ goal in Santos’ goalless draw with Botafogo — a moment that could mark his final outing for the club.
The drama unfolded with just 15 minutes left in the Brazilian league clash when Neymar, chasing a rebound in the box, blatantly used his hand to knock the ball into the net, mimicking Diego Maradona’s famous 1986 World Cup goal.
His action sparked immediate protests from Botafogo players, and the referee wasted no time brandishing a second yellow card, sending off the 33-year-old forward, who was making his first start since returning from injury last month.
After the match, Neymar publicly apologised to his teammates and supporters for his ill-judged attempt.
The dismissal means he will miss Santos’s next league fixture against Fortaleza on Thursday, and unless he agrees to extend his contract, it could be his final appearance for the club before the league pauses in July for the Club World Cup.
