Nigerian Army redeploys 71 Senior Officers in major shake-up

The Nigerian Army has announced a sweeping redeployment involving 60 major generals and 11 brigadier generals across its formations and units.

According to an internal memo dated October 30, 2025, signed by E. L. Okoro, the Military Secretary (Army), the affected officers are expected to assume their new posts by November 3, 2025.

Out of the officers listed, only four major generals — P. A. O. Okoye, Y. Yahaya, I. Otu, and S. Nuhu — were retained in their current locations but reassigned to new roles.

“It is the responsibility of all formations and unit commanders whose officers are affected by this posting to implement accordingly,” the memo stated.

The directive further emphasized strict compliance, warning that commanders who fail to release officers on the stipulated dates or delay their assumption of duty will face disciplinary action.

“Formations and unit commanders are to take immediate administrative action on any officer who fails to report on the effective date of posting and inform this department accordingly. Commanders who fail to release posted officers to report on the date stipulated will be appropriately sanctioned,” the memo added.

The redeployment follows President Bola Tinubu’s recent approval of a major shake-up in the military hierarchy. Last week, Major General Waidi Shaibu replaced Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, who was elevated to Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

Similarly, Air Vice-Marshal Sunday Aneke was appointed the new Chief of Air Staff, while Rear Admiral Idi Abbas was named the Chief of Naval Staff.

The changes come weeks after rumours of a failed coup plot, which the military authorities swiftly denied.

The memo concluded by directing that “commanders will be held responsible for lapses in the implementation of the directive contained herein.”
