NiMet, CARE Nigeria Join forces to strengthen Climate resilience, foster sustainable development
By Sandra Udeike
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has signed a strategic partnership with the Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE) Nigeria to advance climate adaptation, food security, and sustainable development across designated states in the country.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on February 26, 2025, at CARE Nigeria’s office in Abuja, focuses on enhancing early warning systems, supporting contingency planning, and promoting climate-resilient agricultural and food systems.
The collaboration will also address health, nutrition, livelihoods, and humanitarian risk reduction through climate adaptation initiatives.
Speaking at the signing event, NiMet’s Director General and CEO, Professor Charles Anosike, emphasized the urgency of the partnership in building climate resilience for Nigerian farmers and vulnerable communities.
“With this MoU in place, both teams will move swiftly to implement its terms. This is part of our broader commitment to equipping farmers and other climate information users with the necessary tools to mitigate climate risks,” he stated.
Dr. Hussaini Abdu, Country Director of CARE Nigeria, applauded the efficiency of both teams in finalizing the agreement, expressing optimism about the partnership’s long-term impact.
“We only met NiMet’s team last week, and now we’ve successfully signed this MoU. This demonstrates the level of commitment and efficiency on both sides. We hope this marks the beginning of a productive and impactful relationship,” he said.
The agreement, set to last for an initial period of 10 years, aims to create a stronger policy and financing framework for climate action in Nigeria while ensuring long-term environmental sustainability and economic development.
