NiMet issues thunderstorm warning across Nigeria from Sunday to Tuesday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert predicting thunderstorms in various parts of the country from Sunday, April 20 to Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
In its weather forecast released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet stated that on Sunday, thunderstorms are likely in the afternoon and evening over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, and southern Kaduna States. The North Central region is expected to experience partly cloudy conditions in the morning, followed by isolated thunderstorms later in Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger, and Kogi States.
For the southern region, cloudy weather is expected in the morning, with thunderstorms likely in some parts of Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Delta States. As the day progresses, places like Anambra, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Imo, Abia, Ekiti, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Delta States may experience thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.
NiMet also forecasts sunny conditions on Monday morning for most northern states, except Adamawa, Kaduna, and Taraba, where isolated thunderstorms may occur later in the day. The North Central zone is expected to start the day with sunny skies and few clouds, with thunderstorms predicted in the afternoon over Plateau, the FCT, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, and Nasarawa States.
In the southern parts of the country, cloudy skies with breaks of sunshine are expected in the morning, with thunderstorms likely in areas such as Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River. Thunderstorms may also occur later in the day in Lagos, Bayelsa, and Delta States.
For Tuesday, NiMet predicts generally sunny skies in the northern region in the morning, with a possibility of isolated thunderstorms in Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna States later in the day. Thunderstorms are also expected in parts of Benue and Kogi States in the North Central area.
In the southern region, cloudy morning skies are expected, with isolated thunderstorms in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos States. Afternoon and evening storms may affect areas such as Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, and nearby locations.
NiMet has advised Nigerians to remain in cool, well-ventilated places and stay hydrated to avoid heat stress, as high temperatures are expected in many areas. It also recommended health precautions, including vaccinations against meningitis and maintaining good hygiene to prevent infections.
The agency stressed the importance of public safety during this weather period and urged airline operators to consult its detailed weather reports for flight planning.
