Spanish football giants Real Madrid have officially announced the signing of England international Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool on a contract that runs until 2031.

The 26-year-old right-back, who recently clinched the Premier League title with Liverpool, brings an end to his long-standing association with his boyhood club, having risen through the academy ranks to become one of the most decorated players of his generation.

Real Madrid secured Alexander-Arnold’s signature ahead of the expiry of his contract at Anfield, reportedly paying a fee to expedite the move in order to include him in their squad for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

Alexander-Arnold departs Liverpool following a distinguished career spanning 352 appearances, during which he won the UEFA Champions League in 2019, the Premier League in 2020, along with several other domestic and international honours.

His arrival represents a major acquisition for Real Madrid, who endured a disappointing season without major silverware. With regular right-back Dani Carvajal plagued by long-term injury and winger Lucas Vázquez struggling defensively in an improvised role, Alexander-Arnold is expected to bring much-needed stability to the position.

Though occasionally criticised for his defensive positioning, the England star is lauded for his extraordinary passing range and attacking capabilities, qualities Real Madrid will hope to harness under new manager Xabi Alonso, himself a former Liverpool player.

While sections of the Liverpool fanbase expressed dismay at the announcement, Alexander-Arnold’s contribution was ultimately celebrated at Anfield. Former manager Jürgen Klopp and star forward Mohamed Salah led tributes, urging supporters to recognise his legacy. He received a standing ovation during Liverpool’s title celebrations.

Alexander-Arnold is expected to make his debut for Real Madrid on 18 June, when they take on Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in the FIFA Club World Cup.

In addition to Alexander-Arnold, Real Madrid have also strengthened their defence with the signing of Spanish centre-back Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, as preparations intensify for a new era under Alonso’s leadership.
