Panic in Rivers as cultists abduct Five RSU Students in midnight raid
Unknown gunmen suspected to be members of a cult group have abducted at least five students of the Rivers State University (RSU), Emohua Satellite Campus.
The victims were said to have been taken at gunpoint from their off-campus residence in Emohua, Emohua Local Government Area, during a 2am invasion on Tuesday.
The incident comes barely days after students living outside the campus staged a protest over persistent attacks and harassment by cultists. They had pleaded with the RSU management to move them back to the Port Harcourt main campus for safety.
But at a pre-convocation briefing on Monday, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, dismissed the possibility of shutting down the Emohua satellite campus, insisting that the institution was working with community leaders, council authorities and security agencies to address the situation.
One student who narrowly escaped narrated how the attackers shot and killed the security dog before storming the rooms.
“He was running after me and even shot at me, I don’t know how many times,” she recounted. “I had to run faster to the gate. Some of our students, about four or so, are missing now.”
This latest abduction followed last week’s reported robbery attack in Rumuji and occurred barely hours after the Vice Chancellor expressed confidence in the security arrangements around the campus.
Confirming the incident, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, identified the perpetrators as cultists.
“They stormed an isolated area of Rumuchi/Rumuohia, shot sporadically and abducted five persons to an unknown location,” she stated.
Iringe-Koko added that the police had already launched a manhunt:
“As I speak, the Commissioner of Police has gone there with tactical teams to ensure their safe rescue.”
