Parents protest in Abuja over 16-Month unpaid allowances for students abroad
Parents of Nigerian students studying abroad on government scholarships on Monday blocked the entrance of the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja, demanding the immediate payment of long-overdue allowances owed to their children.
The protesters said their children, who are beneficiaries of different bilateral education agreements and government scholarship programmes, have not received stipends for 16 months.
They also noted that an additional eight-month shortfall has remained unresolved, leaving the students stranded in foreign countries.
Many of the parents said the prolonged delay has pushed their children into hardship, with some struggling to pay for food, accommodation, transportation, and basic academic needs.
They called on the Federal Government to take urgent action to prevent further suffering and academic disruption.
More details are expected as the situation develops.
