Pope Leo XIV, head of the Catholic Church, has expressed deep concern over the recent spate of violent attacks on communities in Nigeria, which claimed dozens of lives in Kwara State.

The pontiff’s reaction followed reports that gunmen attacked Woro and neighbouring communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, killing scores of residents.

Daily Trust had earlier reported that at least 100 persons were murdered during the attack on Tuesday. Community sources confirmed that 75 victims were buried on Wednesday, while 13 others were laid to rest on Thursday. Several residents are still missing, raising fears that the casualty figure could rise.

The killings have triggered widespread condemnation within Nigeria and from the international community.

In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Pope Leo XIV said he received news of the attacks with sorrow.

“It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria leading to a heavy loss of life,” the Pope wrote.

He expressed solidarity with victims and their families, describing the violence as a tragic blow to affected communities.

“I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism,” he added.

The pontiff also urged Nigerian authorities to intensify efforts aimed at safeguarding lives and restoring security across the country.

“I likewise hope that the competent authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen,” he said, using the hashtag #PrayTogether.

Pope Leo XIV’s remarks come days after the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, condemned the killings and reaffirmed the UN’s solidarity with Nigeria, pledging continued support for the country’s efforts to combat terrorism and insecurity.
