President Tinubu Applauds Nigerian Governors for Endorsing Tax Reform Bills
President Bola Tinubu has expressed his gratitude to the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) for their unanimous support of the four Tax Reform Bills currently before the National Assembly.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised the governors for demonstrating bold leadership and fostering national unity across regional, ethnic, and political divides to advance Nigeria’s development agenda.
Thursday’s dialogue between the NGF and the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy Reform was hailed as a model of productive cooperation between federal and state governments.
Special commendation was extended to the NGF Chairman, Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, for his role in rallying support for the reform bills. President Tinubu also acknowledged the efforts of the Progressive Governors Forum, the Northern Governors Forum, and other groups whose contributions led to the bipartisan resolution of controversies surrounding the bills.
Highlighting the pro-poor nature of the Tax Reform Bills, President Tinubu noted that their primary objective is to prioritise national interests, improve Nigeria’s economic competitiveness, and attract local and foreign investment. He emphasised that updating the country’s outdated tax laws is crucial to achieving these goals.
The President commended the constructive dialogue between the NGF and the Presidential Committee, which he described as a testament to the power of collaboration in resolving differences. He also reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with the governors to foster economic growth, national harmony, peace, and stability.
President Tinubu encouraged other stakeholders with valuable input on the Tax Bills to engage with the legislative process at the National Assembly. He urged lawmakers to expedite the passage of these vital bills to ensure Nigeria quickly benefits from the proposed reforms.
