President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday in Abuja, officially launched the Torch of Unity Movement for the 22nd National Sports Festival and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the growth of sports in Nigeria.

The festival, dubbed the Gateway Games, will be held in Ogun State from May 16 to May 30.

In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu described sports as a powerful tool for bringing people together and fostering national unity, youth engagement, and economic growth.

He called on both the public and private sectors to play an active role in the development of Nigerian sports, especially in areas such as improving infrastructure, identifying and nurturing talent, and sponsoring sporting events.

The President emphasised that greater collaboration is crucial for unlocking the country’s sporting potential and ensuring Nigeria continues to excel in global competitions.

He also explained that the Torch of Unity symbolises peace, strength, and solidarity, as it travels across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory ahead of the festival.

“The National Sports Festival, since its inception in 1973, has been an important platform for bringing together young athletes from across the country. It is more than just a competition; it is a celebration of unity, resilience, and national pride,” said the President. “Every step towards this festival is a reaffirmation of our commitment to nation-building through sports.”

The President also honoured Nigeria’s sporting legends and paid tribute to Olympic medalist Falilat Ogunkoya, who is serving as the National Torch Bearer. He praised her dedication to promoting unity and sporting excellence.

In addition, President Tinubu wished the Super Eagles the best of luck in their FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe, which was scheduled to take place later on Tuesday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. He expressed confidence that the team would secure a win.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, which will host the festival, said the state is fully prepared to welcome over 10,000 athletes for the event. He noted that the festival is set to break new records, with prominent Nigerian athletes like Anthony Joshua and Tobi Amusan expected to attend.

He quoted Nelson Mandela, saying, “Sports can change the world. They can inspire and unite people in a way that little else can.” He explained that the Torch of Unity, which is travelling across the country, is not just a symbol of the festival but a representation of the shared aspirations of Nigerians.

Governor Abiodun also highlighted that this year’s festival would mark the first time athletes would be housed in a single, purpose-built facility, ensuring comfort and promoting a sense of community. He assured that Ogun’s sporting infrastructure meets international standards and promised a well-organised event that will showcase the best of Nigerian sport.

He thanked President Tinubu for fostering peace in the country, saying that “without peace, there would be no sports festival,” and also praised various stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the National Sports Commission (NSC), for their contributions to the festival’s success.

Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the NSC, referred to the National Sports Festival as Nigeria’s version of the Olympics. He revealed that, for the first time, the NSC has invited the country’s top junior athletes to participate in the festival, adding a new category for young talent.

At the Presidential Villa, the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Monday Onyeme, representing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, handed the Torch of Unity to Shehu Dikko. Dikko then passed it to the Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Hon. Bukola Olopade, who entrusted the torch to Falilat Ogunkoya for its journey across the country.
