Slain Oyo Teacher laid to rest as communities mourn school attack victim
The burial rites for Adesiyan Adegboye, the teacher killed during last Friday’s coordinated attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, commenced on Friday at Ayegun Baptist Church, Ogbomoso.
Adegboye, 49, was shot dead when armed bandits invaded Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School, Esiele, in a brazen attack that left communities in shock.
The late teacher is scheduled to be buried later on Friday at his residence in the Owolake area of Ogbomoso.
The attackers reportedly stormed the schools at about 9:30 a.m., abducting several teachers and pupils during the operation, which triggered panic across the affected communities.
In response to the incident, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, visited the area and ordered the deployment of additional detectives from the Force Headquarters in Abuja to strengthen rescue operations and secure the release of the kidnapped victims.
Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier revealed that seven students were abducted from Community Secondary School, while 18 pupils and seven teachers were kidnapped from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School.
The governor also confirmed that one person lost his life during the attack.
The incident has heightened fears among residents of Ogbomoso and surrounding communities, with many parents reportedly withdrawing their children from schools over security concerns.
Some schools temporarily suspended academic activities following rumours of possible bandit infiltration around Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, although the institution later dismissed the reports.
The attack has renewed concerns over the safety of schools and the growing threat posed by armed criminal groups to educational institutions across the country.
