The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has called on troops involved in Operation Fasan Yamma, tasked with combating banditry and insecurity in north-western Nigeria, to remain vigilant and avoid complacency, cautioning that criminal elements remain relentless in their activities.

Represented by Rear Admiral Abiodun Bankole, General Musa delivered this message during a strategic Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) visit to the 8th Division of the Nigerian Army at Giginya Barracks, Sokoto. He praised the troops for their courage and continued efforts in addressing security challenges but urged them not to lower their guard.

“The battle you are fighting is not a singular one. Stay awake, as your enemies are not sleeping,” he advised the soldiers, emphasising the importance of maintaining constant alertness and resilience on the frontline.

The CDS commended the operational successes of the 8th Division under Operation Fasan Yamma, noting their consistent submission of weekly operational updates to Defence Headquarters.

“The 8th Division continues to receive commendation. The CDS has instructed me to personally praise your GOC and every officer involved in Operation Fasan Yamma for their exemplary performance,” stated Rear Admiral Bankole.

General Musa also highlighted the significance of cooperation between security agencies and the communities they serve, asserting that the fight against insecurity cannot depend solely on weaponry but also requires the trust and support of civilians.

“Let the people come to you, not flee from you. The best intelligence comes from the civilians you protect,” he remarked, underlining the vital role of community trust in effective intelligence gathering.

Rear Admiral Bankole conveyed a heartfelt message to the families of military personnel, expressing hope for their safe return from duty.

“You were not dropped from the sky. You have children, siblings, and families, and we pray that you all return home safely, not in coffins,” he said.

He further reassured that Nigeria’s armed forces remain united and resolute. “Nigeria remains one. The bandits will not prevail, and our Armed Forces will not rest,” he affirmed.

Responding to the visit, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 8th Division, expressed gratitude and reiterated the Division’s commitment to a people-centred strategy.

“The Chief of Defence Staff’s leadership philosophy reminds us that true success in asymmetric warfare lies not only in tactical achievements but in winning the hearts and minds of our people,” Ajose commented.

He further emphasised the moral responsibility of their mission, stating, “As protectors of the vulnerable, we must embody empathy, discipline, and justice. Today’s engagement strengthens our collective resolve.”

The visit also featured a sensitisation session on human rights, gender-based violence, and military ethics, aimed at promoting professionalism and discipline among personnel. Plans were also announced for medical outreach initiatives, sporting events, and media engagements to enhance relationships between troops and the host communities.
