Suspected gunmen on Monday night attacked the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos in Plateau State, killing three security operatives during an attempted breach of Nigeria’s foremost policy institution.

Sources said the attackers stormed the institute at about 11:40 p.m. and opened fire, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire with security personnel stationed at the facility.

A staff member of the institute, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident, saying the gunmen launched the assault unexpectedly.

According to the source, security operatives swiftly engaged the attackers in a bid to prevent them from gaining access to the institution and its residential areas.

The confrontation reportedly claimed the lives of three security personnel — two soldiers and a police officer attached to the institute’s security detail.

The source added that the prompt response of security forces successfully repelled the assailants and prevented them from penetrating deeper into the facility or causing further damage.

Residents of nearby communities were thrown into panic as the sound of sustained gunfire echoed through the area for several minutes.

Speaking on the incident, a resident of Kuru, Mr. Bulus Haruna, said many people feared the attack could escalate before security operatives brought the situation under control.

Meanwhile, the management of NIPSS has confirmed the attack, assuring participants, staff, residents and the general public that the situation has been contained.

In a statement signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Department, Dr. Osime Samuel, the institute said there is currently no threat to lives or property within the facility and that normal activities are continuing as scheduled.

“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies.

“There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled,” the statement said.

The institute disclosed that security agencies have commenced investigations into the incident and cautioned against speculation while inquiries are ongoing.

“Security agencies have commenced investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. As investigations are ongoing, it would be premature to speculate on the nature, scope or outcome of the event.

“The Institute is therefore unable to confirm details currently circulating on social media and other unofficial platforms,” the statement added.

NIPSS said it is working closely with relevant authorities and pledged to provide verified information as soon as it becomes available.

The management also commended the professionalism and bravery displayed by security personnel during the attack and reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and security of everyone within the institute.
