Tinubu extends Customs CG Adeniyi’s tenure by Six Months
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to consolidate ongoing reforms and oversee a structured leadership transition within the service.
Adeniyi’s current tenure, earlier expected to end on August 1, 2026, will now run until February 2027.
The extension is aimed at ensuring the full implementation of the National Single Window initiative, a major trade facilitation reform designed to streamline cargo clearance processes, reduce delays and improve efficiency in international trade operations.
During the extended period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs, as well as the retirement of officers who have reached 60 years of age or completed 35 years in service.
The Presidency said the move is also intended to guarantee an orderly succession process and maintain institutional stability within the service.
Adeniyi began his career in the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s and rose steadily through the ranks over the years. He became Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.
In June 2023, President Tinubu appointed him as Comptroller-General, a position from which he has led several modernization and revenue-enhancement reforms aimed at strengthening the operations of the service.
The latest extension is expected to provide continuity for ongoing reforms while setting the stage for a smooth transition in leadership at the end of his tenure in February 2027.
