President Bola Tinubu is currently presiding over a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The high-level session is expected to formalise the appointment of Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, as the substantive head of the Nigeria Police Force.

The closed-door meeting was convened to affirm Disu’s nomination following the resignation of former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

Disu, who was appointed in an acting capacity last week and subsequently decorated with the rank of IGP, previously served as an Assistant Inspector-General of Police before his elevation. He reportedly has about two months to retirement.

Sources indicate that once the Council endorses the nomination, the President will forward the appointment to the Senate for confirmation in line with constitutional and statutory provisions.

High-Level Attendance

Among those in attendance are Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, alongside state governors and other statutory members.

The Nigeria Police Council, chaired by the President, comprises the governors of the 36 states, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police. Established under the Police Act 2020, it serves as a strategic advisory and oversight body on key policing matters, including internal security policy, administration, budgeting, and senior appointments.

Although the Council does not interfere in day-to-day police operations, it ensures due process in major institutional decisions, particularly the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police.

Monday’s meeting comes amid ongoing security challenges across the country, underscoring the need for stable leadership within Nigeria’s policing architecture.

If confirmed, Disu’s appointment is expected to signal continuity in ongoing reforms and renewed efforts to strengthen public confidence in the Force.
