U.S. Embassy issues security alert ahead of #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja

The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security advisory to its citizens ahead of the planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest scheduled to take place on Monday, October 20, 2025, in the Federal Capital Territory.

The protest, organized by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, is expected to draw large crowds to Eagle Square and the Central Business District. Sowore had earlier announced the march on October 9 via his X (formerly Twitter) account, describing it as a “historic” and peaceful demonstration aimed at securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a statement published on its official website on Friday, the U.S. Embassy cautioned that the demonstration could lead to roadblocks, traffic congestion, and possible confrontations between police and protesters that may escalate into violence.

The Embassy therefore advised Americans in Abuja to avoid protest areas and restrict movement across the city on the day of the demonstration. It also urged that children remain home from school, while domestic staff who commute from outside the city should not report to work.

“U.S. citizens are advised to avoid areas where protests are taking place, avoid crowds, and exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or demonstrations,” the statement read.

The advisory also encouraged Americans to review personal security plans, keep mobile phones fully charged, and stay alert for updates in case of emergency.

The Embassy further advised its nationals to monitor local media, stay vigilant in public areas such as malls, cinemas, and places of worship, and maintain a low profile throughout the protest period.

The planned protest comes amid growing agitation for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in detention since June 2021 following his controversial extradition from Kenya. He is currently standing trial on terrorism-related charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
