US praises Tinubu government over anti-terrorism efforts, mass convictions
The United States has commended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for steps taken to combat terrorism and improve the judicial process in Nigeria.
The commendation was contained in a statement shared on X on Sunday by Massad Fares Boulos, the US Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs.
According to the statement, the US government acknowledged Nigeria’s commitment to speeding up terrorism-related prosecutions and resolving long-standing delays in the justice system.
It specifically welcomed the recent conviction of 386 Islamist militants, describing it as a major milestone in the pursuit of justice and accountability.
“The United States commends the Nigerian government for its strong commitment to expediting trials addressing terrorism and related crimes.
We welcome the convictions of 386 Islamist militants in cases that had previously faced significant delays in the courts, and we recognize this as an important step toward accountability and justice.”
Rule of Law Critical to Stability
The US further stressed that transparent and timely legal processes are essential in confronting violent extremism and rebuilding public trust in judicial institutions.
It added that adherence to the rule of law remains central to ensuring national safety, long-term stability and security for Nigerians.
“We believe that timely and transparent legal processes are critical in confronting extremism and reinforcing public trust in judicial institutions. Upholding the rule of law remains essential to ensuring the safety, stability, and long-term security of all Nigerians.”
Comes After Terror Financing List
The statement comes barely a day after the Federal Government released an updated list of 48 individuals and groups allegedly linked to terrorism financing in Nigeria.
The list, published by the Nigeria Sanctions Committee, named suspects believed to be connected to terror-related activities across the country. Some of those listed were reportedly linked to organisations such as IPOB and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Renewed Focus on Security
The latest US endorsement is seen as a boost to Nigeria’s ongoing counter-terrorism campaign, as authorities intensify military operations, sanctions enforcement and judicial actions aimed at curbing insecurity nationwide.
