Veteran Yoruba actor, cleric Taiwo Adeshina dies at 66
The Yoruba movie industry is mourning the death of veteran actor and cleric Taiwo Adeshina, popularly known by his screen name, Elegbeje Ado.
Adeshina reportedly passed away on Monday, June 29, 2026, after a brief illness. He was 66 years old.
The news of his death was confirmed by filmmaker Seun Oloketuyi, prompting an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, fans and admirers who celebrated his remarkable contributions to Yoruba-language cinema.
Renowned for his exceptional command of the Yoruba language and captivating performances in traditional and historical films, Adeshina became a household name through his portrayal of unforgettable characters in classic Yoruba productions. His popular nickname, Elegbeje Ado, was inspired by one of the roles that first brought him widespread acclaim.
In the later years of his life, the actor dedicated more time to Christian ministry while remaining active in the film industry. Around 2025, he shifted his focus to producing and acting in gospel-themed movies, combining evangelism with his passion for storytelling.
Among the faith-based productions he featured in was Egberun Odun, one of several projects aimed at promoting Christian values through film.
Beyond his achievements on screen, Adeshina was known for openly sharing his personal convictions. In previous interviews, he revealed that he had faced pressure to join secret societies within the entertainment industry but rejected such offers, choosing instead to remain committed to his Christian faith.
His death marks the end of a distinguished career that spanned several decades and left an enduring legacy in the Yoruba film industry. He will be remembered for his cultural authenticity, memorable performances, unwavering principles and lasting impact on Nollywood.
