World Press Freedom Day: NUJ calls for sustained protection of Journalists’ rights
As the global community marks World Press Freedom Day 2026, the Nigeria Union of Journalists has reaffirmed the critical role of a free, independent, and responsible press in promoting democracy, protecting human rights, and driving national development.
In a statement issued by its National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the union aligned with this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” describing it as a direct reflection of Nigeria’s current realities.
The union noted that journalism remains a vital instrument for fostering peace, strengthening democratic institutions, and ensuring accountability, particularly within a complex and evolving security landscape.
The NUJ expressed cautious optimism over what it described as a noticeable improvement in relations between the Department of State Services and the media. It highlighted a decline in reported cases of harassment, intimidation, and arbitrary arrests of journalists, describing the development as a positive step toward reinforcing press freedom and democratic governance.
Commending the leadership of the DSS, particularly its Director-General, the union said the shift reflects the value of professionalism and constructive engagement between security agencies and the media. It stressed that such cooperation is essential for building a peaceful and secure society.
Despite the progress, the NUJ warned that these gains must not be taken for granted. It called for sustained efforts through dialogue, transparency, and strict adherence to the rule of law, emphasising that press freedom remains a constitutional right and a cornerstone of national development and security.
The union also urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security institutions to emulate the approach of the DSS by respecting the rights of journalists and creating an enabling environment for media practice without fear or intimidation.
Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, the NUJ charged journalists across the country to uphold the highest ethical standards, stressing the importance of accuracy, fairness, and responsibility in reporting, especially in matters affecting peace and national cohesion.
It further emphasised that the media and security agencies should not be seen as adversaries but as partners working toward a common goal of safeguarding human rights, promoting peace, and advancing national development.
The NUJ concluded by calling on all stakeholders—including government institutions, security agencies, media practitioners, and citizens—to renew their commitment to protecting press freedom as a vital pillar for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
