Yusuf Buhari declares 2027 House of Representatives bid
Yusuf Buhari, the only male child of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has formally declared his intention to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives in the 2027 general elections.
In a letter personally signed and dated April 3, 2026, titled “Expression of Interest to Contest for the Seat of House of Representatives Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua Federal Constituency,” Yusuf Buhari expressed his readiness to run under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The letter read in part: “After wide consultations, I wish to contest for the seat of the House of Representatives, Sandamu/Daura/Mai’adua, as my contribution to ensure good and qualitative leadership… Your support will help my ambition to succeed, to bring infrastructural development as well as human support and development to the people of this constituency.”
His declaration follows recent endorsements from APC stakeholders in Sandamu Local Government Area of Katsina State, who reportedly identified him as their preferred candidate for the constituency. The endorsement was confirmed during a high-level meeting at the Sandamu Local Government Secretariat, attended by elected officials and political appointees from across the constituency.
The council chairman, Usman Na-Lado, described the decision as a collective choice by party stakeholders, citing Yusuf Buhari’s perceived capacity and acceptance within the party. He also stated that the meeting reaffirmed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Dikko Radda as the APC’s candidates for the presidency and governorship in 2027.
However, sources within the party suggested that the endorsement may have been influenced by the state government, with one describing Yusuf Buhari as the governor’s “anointed candidate.”
Yusuf Buhari’s entry into the race marks a high-profile development ahead of the 2027 general elections, signaling growing political activity in Katsina State as parties position themselves for key legislative contests.
