BREAKING: 16 Inmates break out of Keffi Custodial Centre, 7 recaptured
Sixteen inmates have escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Keffi (New) in Nasarawa State after breaking through the facility’s security and attacking on-duty personnel.
According to a statement signed by the Service Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, August 12, 2025. Five correctional officers sustained varying degrees of injuries while trying to contain the situation and are receiving treatment at a government health facility.
The statement confirmed that seven of the escapees have been recaptured and returned to custody.
The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, has ordered a full investigation into the incident and directed a coordinated manhunt with sister security agencies to apprehend the remaining fugitives.
The public has been urged to stay calm, remain vigilant, and report any suspicious movement or sightings of the fleeing inmates to the nearest security post.
