2027: Why I might not be alive to contest – Peter Obi
The 2027 presidential hopeful of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has raised concerns over his personal safety, alleging that he is being systematically targeted and that he may not even be alive to participate in the next general election.
Obi made the remarks during an interview on With Chude, hosted by media personality Chude Jideonwo, in which he claimed that the current administration was deliberately frustrating his business interests and targeting opposition figures.
Responding to a question on whether he would be on the ballot in 2027, Obi said there was no certainty.
> “Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. I’m telling you. Every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating it. Deliberately so. Everything. So, there is even a possibility, if they have the opportunity, I will not be alive,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor clarified that he was not making a direct accusation against anyone but maintained that he experiences what he described as deliberate obstruction in his daily activities.
According to him, while there may not be open confrontation, the actions taken against him suggest an organised pattern of intimidation.
Obi further alleged that the pressure extends beyond him, claiming that other opposition figures are also being targeted.
> “They are attacking everybody who is in opposition personally,” he said, adding that he has also been denied certain entitlements due to him.
To support his claim, Obi recounted an incident at an airport where he alleged that officials locked only his vehicle while allowing others to leave without restriction.
> “But I said, ‘Look at the cars of other people.’ And you could see them talking to each other, as if, ‘Who is this one?’” he recalled.
He also claimed that some of his supporters and associates now avoid publicly associating with him for fear of possible repercussions.
According to Obi, some acquaintances have privately requested that he stay away from family events.
> “I have people send me invitations and say, ‘My son, my daughter is wedding, but please don’t come,’” he said.
The former governor’s comments come amid heightened political activities and growing consultations ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition parties stepping up efforts to challenge the ruling administration.
