Sultan of Sokoto calls for regulation of Social Media to curb fake news

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on the Federal Government to introduce regulations for social media, warning that the growing spread of fake news poses a serious threat to national peace and stability.
Speaking at the Northern Traditional Rulers Council General Assembly held on Tuesday in Birnin Kebbi, the Sultan expressed concern over how quickly misinformation circulates online, noting that many Nigerians often take false reports as fact.
“It is now time for the government to regulate social media in the country. The spread of fake news is dangerous and must be addressed,” he said.
The monarch also commended the Nigerian military for their sustained efforts in combating insecurity nationwide, especially in tackling banditry. He noted that without their sacrifices, the meeting in Kebbi might not have been possible.
“I strongly condemn some of the harsh words directed at our military because of certain setbacks. They are doing their best to restore security in many parts of the country,” he stated. “Such criticism does not help. Instead, it discourages those who are putting their lives on the line for our safety.”
In his welcome address, the Vice Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council and Emir of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Elkanemi, said the theme of the assembly, “Strengthening Community Collaboration for Lasting Peace and Security in Northern Nigeria,” underscores a collective resolve to address insecurity through dialogue and partnership.
He highlighted the key role of traditional institutions in applying non-kinetic approaches to resolving security challenges, describing them as a vital bridge between government authorities and grassroots communities.
The meeting was attended by Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, the Etsu Nupe, and several other prominent traditional rulers from across Northern Nigeria.
