Fear and tension swept through Nawfia community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday after unknown gunmen launched a deadly attack at the Afor Market Junction, leaving several residents feared dead.

Though full details were still emerging at press time, eyewitnesses said the attackers struck suddenly along the Awka–Onitsha old road, shooting indiscriminately and causing chaos in the area. Multiple bodies were reportedly seen on the ground, with traces of violence and panic visible around the scene.

The President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, Chief Daniel Okoye, condemned the attack, describing it as a senseless act meant to destabilise the peaceful community.

In a statement, Okoye said he received the news of the assault with shock, confirming that “multiple casualties” were recorded. He noted that security agencies had been contacted immediately and that investigations were already underway to identify and apprehend the gunmen.

He urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, and to cooperate fully with security personnel working to restore peace and stability.

Okoye also extended the union’s condolences to families of the victims and assured them of continued support as the community works to recover from the tragedy.

As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command had not yet issued an official reaction to the attack.
