Man United move closer to naming interim boss as Carrick, Solskjaer top list
Manchester United are set to fast-track the appointment of an interim head coach, with Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer emerging as the leading contenders following face-to-face talks with the club’s hierarchy.
According to Sky Sports News, both former United players have formally presented their plans to senior figures at Old Trafford, with further detailed discussions expected to continue on Monday as the club edges closer to a final decision.
Sources familiar with the talks indicate that Carrick impressed strongly during his meetings, earning plaudits for his vision and tactical clarity. However, there is also a strong appreciation within the club of the goodwill and popularity Solskjaer enjoyed during his previous spell as manager.
United are keen to conclude the process swiftly in order to give the interim coach enough time to prepare the team for Saturday’s high-profile Manchester derby at Old Trafford.
The search follows the end of Darren Fletcher’s agreed short-term stint in charge of the first team. Speaking after United’s 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton, Fletcher confirmed that his temporary role had come to an end and that he would return to Carrington on Monday to discuss his next position within the club structure.
The loss to Brighton further deepened United’s struggles this season, with the club now eliminated from both domestic cup competitions. As a result, the Premier League remains their only remaining focus for the rest of the campaign.
