Russian strikes kill civilians in Ukraine, including passenger train attack

At least eight people have been killed in Ukraine following renewed Russian strikes, including an attack on a civilian passenger train, Ukrainian authorities reported on Monday.

Casualties Across Multiple Regions

The eastern city of Kramatorsk, a strategic Ukrainian stronghold, saw three fatalities as Russian forces continued their advance, according to the city’s military administration head.

In Druzhkivka, in Donetsk region — annexed by Russia in 2022 along with three other Ukrainian regions — two people were killed and 13 others wounded during separate attacks.

The Dnipropetrovsk region suffered further losses when a drone strike hit a moving train, killing a 75-year-old man and wounding nine others. The body of a 55-year-old man was also recovered from rubble in the same region. Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba confirmed that the train crew stopped immediately, evacuated passengers, and provided first aid.

A woman born in 1937 was also reported killed in the northern Chernigiv region, which borders Russia.

Targeting Infrastructure

Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, CEO of Ukrainian Railways, previously stated that Russian strikes on train infrastructure appear to be a deliberate effort to isolate regions of Ukraine and disrupt civilian movement.

Context

The attacks come amid ongoing international efforts, led by the United States, to push for a peace deal between Kyiv and Moscow. Russia’s invasion, which began in February 2022, has resulted in the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II, with hundreds of thousands of military and civilian casualties.
