Macron backs Spain amid Trump’s trade threats
French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday expressed support for Spain following threats from U.S. President Donald Trump to “cut off all trade” with the country.
According to Le Parisien, Macron held a phone conversation with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, conveying France’s “European solidarity” in response to the economic pressure from the United States.
The move comes after Trump, frustrated over Spain’s refusal to allow U.S. military use of its bases for attacks on Iran, warned on Tuesday that trade relations with Spain could be severed.
In response, Prime Minister Sanchez firmly rejected the threats, stating that Spain would not succumb to “reprisals from anyone,” signaling a stand against external coercion in matters of national sovereignty.
