Tinubu commissions Ogun Airport, reaffirms Nigeria’s path to greatness
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to national development, declaring that the country remains on track to achieving greatness.
The President gave the assurance on Saturday during the commissioning of the Gateway International Airport in Iperu-Remo, located in Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Describing the project as a major economic hub, Tinubu said ongoing reforms and infrastructure investments are already yielding results across key sectors of the economy.
The event also featured the inauguration of several projects, including two aircraft under Gateway Air, 1,000 electric motorcycles, 80 security vehicles, agricultural tractors, as well as the Nigeria Customs Service Village, a Forward Operating Base, and the reconstructed Sapade–Ilishan Road, now renamed the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Expressway.
While acknowledging that current macroeconomic reforms may pose short-term challenges, Tinubu stressed that such measures are necessary for long-term economic stability and prosperity.
“Our investments are centered on our people. The infrastructure we see today reflects our confidence in the future of our country,” he said, adding that Nigeria is “firmly on the path” to renewed greatness.
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, described the President’s visit as historic, noting that it reflects strong federal support for subnational development. He highlighted significant growth in the state’s internally generated revenue and GDP over the past seven years.
According to Abiodun, the airport project—featuring a nearly four-kilometre runway, modern aviation systems, and cargo facilities—will serve as the nucleus of an emerging aerotropolis, boosting trade and logistics. He also announced the launch of Gateway Airlines with Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the collaboration between the executive and legislature, stressing that such synergy is key to national development.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who attended the event, described the airport as a landmark achievement, noting its strategic importance and convenience for residents.
Other dignitaries at the event included former Ogun State governors Olusegun Osoba, Gbenga Daniel, and Ibikunle Amosun, as well as top government officials, business leaders, and stakeholders.
The commissioning marks another milestone in Ogun State’s infrastructure drive and aligns with the Federal Government’s broader economic reform agenda aimed at positioning Nigeria as a competitive global economy.
