Tension mounts in Oyo Assembly over alleged impeachment plot against speaker Ogundoyin
Tension is rising in Oyo State as what initially began as speculation about an impeachment plot within the State House of Assembly has now developed into a full-scale political crisis, drawing quiet but close attention from the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).
The situation, which first surfaced as unconfirmed whispers, has now escalated into a serious development reportedly causing divisions among lawmakers and heightening political uncertainty in the state.
At the centre of the crisis is a crucial meeting said to have been held at the residence of Governor Seyi Makinde, where lawmakers were reportedly summoned amid concerns over an alleged attempt to create friction between the executive and legislative arms of government.
Following the meeting, members of the Assembly have begun to openly take sides. While some lawmakers, including the Deputy Speaker, have denied any involvement in impeachment plans, others have remained silent, a development that has further fuelled speculation of internal divisions.
The Chief Whip, Hon. Gbenga Oyekola, has been one of the most vocal figures, stating in a Facebook post that he was neither aware of nor involved in any impeachment move. He stressed that he would not support any action capable of destabilising the state and reaffirmed his loyalty to Governor Makinde.
Oyekola also referenced discussions said to have taken place during the governor’s meeting, alleging that the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, had been approached by influential political and traditional figures regarding future political ambitions, including reported financial inducements which he allegedly rejected.
Despite repeated denials from some lawmakers, uncertainty continues to deepen within the Assembly as more members are expected to publicly declare their positions in the coming days.
Observers say the silence of certain lawmakers may be as significant as the statements already made, suggesting that deeper political divisions may still be unfolding beneath the surface.
The situation has also revived earlier political warnings attributed to former Governor Ayodele Fayose, whose past comments about possible instability in Oyo politics are now being widely revisited.
Meanwhile, the APC is said to be closely monitoring the situation, weighing its possible implications as the crisis unfolds.
As developments continue, attention remains fixed on the Oyo State House of Assembly, with many watching to see whether the growing tension will be resolved through political reconciliation or escalate further into a full legislative showdown.
