The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday a work-free day to commemorate the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH, in recognition of its significance to the Muslim community.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday in Ibadan by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade.

According to the statement, the state government said the declaration reflects its recognition of the importance of the Hijrah, which marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 AD.

Oyelade described the event as a major milestone in Islamic history, noting that it offers an opportunity for reflection, prayer, and renewed commitment to peace and unity.

“As a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, the government has declared Tuesday a work-free day in the state,” the statement read.

He urged Muslim faithful across the state to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in Oyo State and Nigeria at large.

The commissioner also encouraged residents to reflect on the lessons of the Hijrah and embrace values of tolerance, brotherhood, and mutual respect among diverse communities.

He added that such observances help strengthen social cohesion and promote harmony across religious and cultural divides in the state.
