Wike welcomes Supreme Court Judgment on Rivers State political impasse

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has delivered a series of judgments that have significantly impacted the political landscape of Rivers State.

The court declared the recent local government elections in the state invalid due to non-compliance with electoral laws.

Additionally, it recognized Martins Amaewhule as the legitimate Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Accountant-General to withhold allocations to the state until a valid budget is presented and approved by the Amaewhule-led Assembly.

These rulings have deepened the political crisis in Rivers State, which has been marked by divisions between factions aligned with Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The pro-Wike faction has welcomed the judgments, viewing them as a victory for democracy and the rule of law. However, the situation remains tense, with concerns about impending crisis.

Speaking in Abuja after the judgment, Barr Wike stated that the decision had effectively put an end to what he called the reign of impunity in Rivers State.

He emphasized that as the highest judicial authority in the country, the Supreme Court’s verdict must be fully respected and implemented.
