I Am a Journalist, and This Is My 2025 New Year Resolution
As we rolled into 2025, I found myself with a blank notepad and a pen that’s itching for action. Journalists aren’t usually known for making resolutions—we’re too busy chasing stories, dodging deadlines, and surviving on caffeine. But this year, I’ve decided to change that. Why? Because even journalists need a little order amidst the chaos.
So, here’s my New Year resolution list for 2025. Don’t judge me—it’s equal parts practical, ambitious, and peppered with humor because, let’s face it, journalism isn’t for the faint-hearted.
1. No More Fighting with My Alarm Clock
Every journalist knows the horror of breaking news at 5 a.m. My relationship with my alarm clock is… complicated. This year, I vow to stop treating it like the enemy. Instead of hitting snooze five times, I’ll try to wake up on the first ring. I said try.
2. Say Goodbye to Procrastination
Deadlines are my constant companion, and let’s just say I’ve danced dangerously close to missing a few. In 2025, I plan to write my stories before my editor starts sending “gentle reminders” that feel more like threats.
3. Stop Calling Press Conferences “Free Lunch” Events
Sure, they sometimes serve jollof rice and small chops, but this year, I’ll focus more on the content and less on the refreshments. (Okay, maybe one spring roll won’t hurt.)
4. Master the Art of Power Naps
Covering events that stretch from morning to midnight is no joke. This year, I’ll embrace the journalist’s secret weapon: the power nap. Fifteen minutes of shut-eye in the press van might just save my sanity.
5. Say “No” to the Impossible Interview
Dear politicians, celebrities, and big-shot CEOs: I’m done chasing you through corridors for a two-minute soundbite. In 2025, if you don’t want to talk, that’s fine. I’ll write the story without you.
6. Invest in a Bulletproof Coffee Mug
Journalists need coffee like cars need fuel. This year, I’ll finally buy a mug that doesn’t spill all over my notes. (It’s 2025; surely such technology exists.)
7. Stop Complaining About the Lack of Chairs at Events
Every journalist knows the struggle of standing for hours because event organizers forgot to include seats for the press. In 2025, I’ll carry my own foldable chair. Problem solved.
8. Fact-Check Like My Life Depends on It
Fake news is everywhere, and it’s our job to fight it. This year, I’ll triple-check every fact, name, and figure. No more embarrassing corrections after publication.
9. Celebrate the Wins—Big or Small
Whether it’s landing an exclusive interview or finding Wi-Fi at a remote event, I’ll celebrate the little victories. Journalism is tough, and a pat on the back goes a long way.
10. Remember Why I Chose This Job
Despite the long hours, low pay, and occasional drama, I love being a journalist. In 2025, I’ll hold on to the passion that got me here in the first place. Telling stories, uncovering truths, and giving a voice to the voiceless—that’s why I do what I do.
So, here’s to a year of better habits, great stories, and fewer coffee stains. Happy New Year to my fellow journalists—and may your deadlines be kind!
Comment, if you can relate.

My experience of new year resolutions, they are always windfall wishes, that are never kept, too many distraction, may God help you to keep to yours, I never kept to mine.

Number 5 sends fresh reminder. That Number is first on my list. I can relate with all. Number 2 is also alarming.
