IGP Disu sets up committee to drive State Police implementation
Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu has inaugurated a seven-member committee tasked with overseeing the implementation of state police across Nigeria.
The committee, chaired by Professor Olu Ogunsakin, a police studies expert, was inaugurated on Wednesday to propose an operational framework for establishing and coordinating state police structures nationwide.
Committee Mandate
During the inauguration, IGP Disu emphasized that the committee should focus on:
Reviewing existing policing models in Nigeria and internationally
Assessing community security needs and emerging risks
Proposing operational frameworks for state police structures
Addressing recruitment, training, standards, and resource allocation
Developing robust accountability and oversight mechanisms
Disu noted that decentralizing policing would allow state and local authorities to respond more effectively to specific security challenges. “State policing holds significant potential benefits for our country,” he said. “By bringing law enforcement closer to communities, state police institutions can deepen local knowledge of security dynamics and enable quicker and more targeted responses to emerging threats.”
Committee Members
Alongside Professor Ogunsakin, other members of the committee include:
Bode Ojajuni (Secretary)
Okebechi Agora
Suleyman Gulma
Ikechukwu Okafor
Tolulope Ipinmisho
Emmanuel Ojukwu
Background
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has repeatedly promised the creation of state police to tackle Nigeria’s growing insecurity. Recently, he urged the National Assembly to amend the 1999 Constitution to establish a legal framework for state police, a process that has now commenced.
This committee’s recommendations are expected to guide the structure, operations, and governance of state police institutions, marking a significant step toward localized security management in Nigeria.
