Niger Government warns Communities against sheltering thugs, vows consequences
In response to recent disturbances caused by thugs and social miscreants within Minna metropolis, the Niger State Government has issued a stern warning to communities and their leaders, known locally as Mai Angwas, against harbouring criminals.
Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba delivered the warning during a visit to various troubled parts of Minna following increased reports of thuggery and insecurity in the state capital.
Garba emphasized that any community found to be protecting or concealing criminals would face serious consequences. He noted that the government is determined to curb the rising wave of insecurity and restore law and order in affected areas.
He directed security agencies to intensify operations in identified hotspots, apprehend culprits, and ensure peace returns to the metropolis. “Communities that fail to report criminal elements will be held accountable,” Garba stated, urging residents to cooperate with security forces by reporting any suspicious activities for swift intervention.
The Deputy Governor toured several flashpoints, including Dutsen Kura, Kpakungu Soje A&B, Morris area, and Tudun Wada police station. He was accompanied by the Niger State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, officials from the State Security Service (SSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and members of local vigilante groups.
So far, security operatives have arrested 61 suspects linked to thuggery, social mischief, and armed robbery in the Minna metropolis.
