EFCC partners NUJ to combat illegal Mining, Cybercrime in Nigeria
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced its plans to collaborate with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the fight against illegal mining and cybercrime in Nigeria.
This was revealed by Bawa Usman, the acting Zonal Director of the EFCC’s Kaduna Zonal Directorate, during a visit to the NUJ, Niger State Council in Minna. Usman emphasized that the battle against illegal mining and cybercrime is too vast for the EFCC to handle alone, urging journalists to take ownership of the fight. He highlighted the importance of media involvement to ensure the success of these efforts.
Usman also disclosed that the EFCC has apprehended four Chinese nationals, 21 other individuals in Jos, Plateau State, and 33 illegal miners, all of whom will soon face legal action in court.
In his remarks, Usman commended journalists as crucial partners in the fight against corruption and outlined the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to tackle cybercrime in the state, which he believes are vital to curbing criminal activity.
Responding, Abu Nmodu, the State Chairman of the NUJ, expressed concern over the growing prevalence of cybercrime in Niger State, calling it a serious threat. He assured the EFCC of the union’s full support and advocated for training media professionals on best practices regarding the Commission’s work and reporting on its activities.
This partnership between the EFCC and NUJ marks a significant step toward enhancing the fight against these criminal activities and ensuring a united front in tackling illegal mining and cybercrime in Nigeria.
