Tinubu still in Charge from Abroad, Presidency assures Nigerians amid criticism

The Presidency has assured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu remains actively involved in the governance of the country despite being away in Europe for nearly two weeks.
According to a statement released on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President is expected to return to Nigeria on Monday, April 21, after the Easter holidays.
The statement, titled ‘Statement On President Tinubu’s Return To Nigeria’, emphasized that the President’s absence is temporary and within the communicated two-week timeframe. Tinubu, who travelled from Paris to London over the weekend, is said to be in constant communication with top government officials and has issued directives to address emerging security threats in parts of the country.
“President Tinubu remains fully engaged in Nigeria’s governance,” Onanuga said. “He has given direct orders to security chiefs regarding the increasing security concerns in some regions, and his commitment to his duties remains unwavering.”
While the presidency did not clarify the purpose of his trip, it aligns with similar working visits the President has undertaken since assuming office. The statement appears to be a direct response to criticism from opposition leaders over his continued stay abroad amid rising insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in Plateau and Benue states.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi had both raised concerns over Tinubu’s absence during what they described as a critical time for the nation.
Onanuga, however, assured Nigerians that governance is proceeding without disruption and urged the public to remain calm.
“The President’s return to Abuja and resumption of duties at Aso Villa will follow the conclusion of the Easter holiday. We appreciate the public’s concern and assure all Nigerians that governance proceeds without interruption,” he added.
