Lagos to introduce monthly rent payment structure

The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to implement flexible rent payment structures, including monthly and quarterly options, aimed at alleviating the financial burden on residents, particularly those on low incomes.
The Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, made this known during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held in commemoration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second year in office.
Akinderu-Fatai stated that the government is currently engaging with landlords, developers, and key stakeholders to address potential challenges related to enforcement and payment systems.
“We recognise the strain that annual rent payments impose on many Lagosians. By offering more flexible options, we aim to reduce this pressure and enhance living conditions. We believe that monthly or quarterly payment alternatives will provide individuals with greater financial flexibility and mitigate the stress associated with raising lump sums,” he remarked.
He further highlighted the state’s ongoing rent-to-own scheme, which enables beneficiaries to make an initial payment of just five per cent and spread the remaining balance over a ten-year period, a programme that has already offered relief to numerous residents.
Akinderu-Fatai reaffirmed the government’s dedication to devising practical solutions that reflect the economic realities faced by its citizens, assuring that housing reforms will continue to prioritise inclusivity and sustainability.
