Tinubu cancels Nationwide Broadcast, To address Nigerians from National Assembly on Democracy Day

President Bola Tinubu has officially cancelled his planned nationwide broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day anniversary, opting instead to deliver his address during a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday.
This development was confirmed in a statement released by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, who explained that the change is due to the President’s confirmed attendance at the joint parliamentary session where he will present his Democracy Day speech.
The statement, however, assured Nigerians that all other previously scheduled activities for the day will remain unchanged.
Themed “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms”, this year’s Democracy Day observance highlights the Tinubu administration’s focus on advancing democratic achievements through institutional and structural reforms.
During his address at the National Assembly, President Tinubu is expected to outline the government’s reform plans, emphasize national unity, and remind both citizens and institutions of their roles in safeguarding the country’s democracy.
This year’s commemoration marks 26 years since Nigeria’s return to civil rule in 1999 and honours the significance of June 12 — a date recognised nationwide as Democracy Day in remembrance of the historic 1993 presidential election, widely acclaimed as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s political history.
